The Future That Emerges from the Rift
Masato Tahara
When we face the collapse of things, we feel pain and, at times, despair. But that pain is at the same time a trigger that awakens the fundamental wish to “do something about it.” As we repeat dialogue with those around us and share with one another, the relief of “I was not the only one” turns into conviction, and energy quietly amplifies. A “rift” opens in daily life, and the magma of the soul that lay hidden in its depths erupts. That, precisely, is the driving force that brings a new future into being beyond a collapsing reality.
At present, the social systems built after the war no longer fit reality and are malfunctioning. Before us, unavoidable “turning points of collapse” loom one after another.
- The 2030 Problem: the target deadline for the SDGs, and a crucial branch point for not crossing the “point of no return” in climate change. At the same time, the “quiet emergency” in which severe labor shortages make the maintenance of existing society difficult will surface.
- The 2040 Problem: the elderly population peaks, and its ratio to the working generation reaches its limit. With the possible disappearance of municipalities under discussion, a fundamental restructuring (reboot) of social structure itself becomes indispensable.
- The Climate Crisis: the system that has prioritized the economy has burst through the planet’s carrying capacity, and the ecosystem itself faces the danger of collapse.
But I believe that this very crisis of collapse creates “rifts” in the world. From them, people who want to “do something about it” appear, erupt the magma of their souls, and bring the future into being. Its buds have already begun to sprout, at “sites” all over.
In the collapsing publishing and bookselling industry, Ryūshōkan Bookshop in Tanimachi 6-chōme, Osaka, is proving the new value of a bookshop. Its proprietor, Tomoko Futamura, without yielding to the industry’s structural difficulties, practices a “higher-dimensional mapping” that connects the souls of authors and readers, and keeps turning books into “encounters that change lives.”
Cafe Slow in Kokubunji, too, set out from the sincere struggle of its representative, Jun Yoshioka, who confronts his own “complicity” in the face of the climate crisis and social problems. Like the “hummingbird’s single drop” that keeps carrying one drop of water at a time, his stance of accumulating the small practices one can do oneself becomes a quiet but sure objection to a society that prioritizes efficiency.
And then, Nishiogikubo. Nawa Prasad, with fifty years of history, was a base for the “transformation of consciousness.” At the turning point of the retirement of its second-generation proprietor, Yuriko Takahashi, I was driven by the impulse of “I don’t want this value to disappear,” and together with the writer Amy Aoumi, I took over the baton. The newly reborn “PuraPura (Planetary Prasad) Bookshop” will become, amid the rough seas of the AI era, a new magnetic field where human beings ask anew about “meaning.”
To link these wishes to “do something about it,” arising at sites all over, into a great current, the limited liability company Aryū was born.
Originally, the starting point was that Yoshihiro Fujii (Fujiimon) made a hundred-day pilgrimage around Korea in 2009 and saw, beyond the historical pain between Japan and Korea, a vision of a “new world.” Answering his call, four people came together: Fujii, Kim (Ohaio), Sedohara, and Tahara.
The limited liability company Aryū begins its challenge to draw out the voices and possibilities of the various tributaries (aryū) that are not the mainstream (the main current), and to recover a pluralistic spirituality. On the foundation of Japanese animism and the Korean Donghak worldview, it envisions a shift from “ownership” based on ego to a social structure of “great having (daiyū),” in which all things are brought to life.
Our society is forever repeating collapse and generation. As long as the feeling of “wanting to do something about it” outweighs the collapse, this world can, any number of times, bring a new future into being out of the rift of despair.

(Masato Tahara)

El futuro que emerge de la grieta
Masato Tahara
Nuestra sociedad repite eternamente derrumbe y generación.

(Masato Tahara)
