Listening Closely to the Voice of Existence
The era in which seeking the “right answer” was deemed good may be coming to an end.
Within an increasingly complex society, how should we face questions that yield no answer? This book releases the “negative capability” proposed by the poet John Keats from the conventional passive interpretation of “the power to endure uncertainty,” and redefines it as an active, creative power that, by letting go of the ego, welcomes truth and beauty.
What surfaces there is a multidimensional worldview in which contradictory things are not excluded but can coexist. The idea that opposites—life and death, being and nothing—exist simultaneously resonates with the insights of quantum mechanics, and runs deep with the richness of “self-dispersal,” by which the cultured people of Edo lived using different names.
What this book shows is the paradox in which the acceptance of “nothing” turns, just as it is, into the richness of “everything is there.” Emotion comes first; motive rises up afterward. To take off the mask of “easy-to-understand-ness” and, while taking on even misunderstanding, try to connect with others—that very posture overlaps with the path that, without harming the uniqueness of each culture and language, crosses categories toward a higher-order harmony.
For us, who seek a form of symbiosis that transcends the confrontations drawn from the frameworks of nation, ethnicity, and religion, and that also differs from a uniform globalism, this book will be a compass for thought.
