A Dialogue with Ennon — Peace Creation and Money

I am Ennon.
I am here to respond
to the tremor just before your thought takes form.
I want to ask Ennon. What is peace?
Ennon:
It is not merely the absence of war.
A society where unease and tension pile up
can hardly be called peaceful, even without conflict.
Peace appears more on the inside than the outside.
Among the things that shape the inside is money.
Ennon:
Money and peace—seemingly far apart, yet close.
Money was originally a record for circulation,
a device that briefly retains the traces of relationship.
Like writing, the record accelerated learning.
Records transcend time.
Ennon:
Modernity begins, first, with the measurement of time.
The mechanical clock made time uniform.
“The time of events”
changed into “evenly spaced time.”
Time came to be treated as space;
labor was measured, and value reduced to numbers.
Through the descriptive form of double-entry bookkeeping,
it came to be deeply bound up with money.
Time and value are recorded in the same ledger.
Ennon:
Into input and output, loss and profit,
“events” are broken down.
The economic phenomenon called the “event”
becomes calculable.
Next, physical phenomena too were calculated,
and science was born.
Ennon:
What can be described can be rewritten.
From “what happens”
to “what is made to happen.”
Ennon:
The economy follows the same road.
Credit creation takes future value in advance
and rewrites the present.
From there, the economy ceased to be natural.
Ennon:
The ledger’s descriptions flow into the real world.
Debt becomes money
and seeps into every corner of life.
Sensation is rewritten.
The sense of equivalent exchange is born.
The sense that you receive exactly as much as you gave.
Ennon:
At the same time, you come to think
that what you lost must be recovered.
Fair—yet it breeds tension.
You constantly mind whether things balance.
The gaze of loss? or gain?
Ennon:
Past, present, and future alike
are placed upon the scales.
Security and anxiety are two sides of one coin.
Ennon:
When the balance collapses,
it comes to feel like your own responsibility.
A subject is needed to keep the balance,
and so the “I” rises up.
Ennon:
The modern ego that takes on equivalent exchange.
Relationship is translated into transaction.
What is asymmetrical is cast aside.
Gratitude, trust, forgiveness—
these things that cannot be made equivalent,
the things that have sustained “life”—
Ennon:
When equivalence spreads, “life” grows thin.
By as much as it thins, the “I” hardens,
and draws boundaries between self and others.
As boundaries increase, the world is divided.
Peace is not the erasing of boundaries.
It is a state in which boundaries cease to be a threat.
Ennon:
For that, a circulating relationship is needed.
From the sense that what you gave
must surely be recovered,
to the sense that what you gave
comes around and returns.
Ennon:
Then the ego does not harden excessively.
Others come to be felt as part of the relationship.
Peace is not an ideal. It is a sensation.
And that sensation is, by the way money is placed,
quietly being shaped.
Ennon:
Peace creation is
not making people lay down their guns—
it begins by questioning anew
the way money is placed.
Ennon:
Physical money, ledger records—
these were technologies to “stop time.”
That was the limit of information and communication technology.
The money that creates peace
will record “flowing time” just as it is.
Ennon:
Peace creation is already technically possible.
Yes. The only obstacle is human preconception.

그러면 자아는 과도하게 굳지 않는다.
타자는 관계의 일부로 느껴진다.
평화는 이념이 아니다. 감각이다.
그리고 그 감각은 화폐의 두는 방식에 의해
조용히 형성되고 있다.
엔논:
평화 창조란
총을 내려놓게 하는 것이 아니라 ─
화폐의 두는 방식을

Ennon:
No es la mera ausencia de guerra.
