Moose Heads on the Table

Rui Sato

I support making organizations better through “listening.”

“Listening” is a way of listening that receives the other’s words without judging—not stiffening the shoulders with “I must listen attentively,” but lending an ear while feeling.

With “listening,” relationships change. For example, when you work, you meet opinions different from your own, even directly opposite ones. “What is making that person feel this way?” Thinking so, you set aside the voice in your own head, concentrate on what the other is feeling, and listen. Then that person’s own reasons come out.

Those reasons cannot be infringed by anyone, and make you want to respect them. When a person is listened to all the way, their head gets organized, and they can notice for themselves what they want to value. Their feelings loosen a little.

This accumulation of “a little” leads to mutual respect. A relationship in which we can respect one another is comfortable, and an important element for becoming easier to work together. Through this chain, an organization changes.

In Moose Heads on the Table, taking such “listening” and the like as the foundation, it is told how to create a “boss-less organization.” (It is not exactly the same as the “listening” I have in mind.)

Because it is a record of practice, the writing is easy to understand and reads lightly.

But it must not end there.

If you read this story from the viewpoint of “what if I were to practice it,” it may become a trigger for you to change your organization. Someday, let me listen to your impressions of reading it.

(Rui Sato)

Cabezas de alce sobre la mesa

Rui Sato

Mousehead on the Table

(Rui Sato)
